SPF Annual Portfolios

The SPF Annual Portfolios is a club and individual competition open to Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints and Digital Images (PDIs). Entries are submitted by 1st May each year at drop-off points or direct to the organiser John McVie. The event is judged in-camera, by three judges. After Judging, the highest scoring entries (Approx. 25% to 33% of total entry) form the Annual Portfolio of accepted Prints and Projected Images for the year.

Portfolio shows of the accepted entries are made up on disc for clubs to show on a clubnight, and a copy is placed in the SPF's archive. All clubs who book a copy, are sent a disc to keep, in the November following the judging - Participating clubs get this for free. There is a nominal charge for non-participating clubs. See below for details of how to book your Club's copy.

Additional individual awards are again being presented - Best Nature, Best Creative, Best Portrait and Best Landscape will join the Judge's Choices and Best Overall.

Entry is by Online Entry - All entries uploaded by Club Organiser, by author, then the Club Entry is chosen from those entries. Digital Images of all Prints submitted are also required to be uploaded to give the best possible quality in the Portfolio Shows, which are supplied to the Clubs for viewing during next season.

NEW - When making your online entry, please indicate if you wish to receive a free DVD copy of the Portfolio Shows of acceptances for viewing as part of your next season’s Club syllabus; Discs will be posted first week in Nov to the address supplied. (only 1 copy per Club)

NEW - Maximum file size accepted for upload is now 1600x1200, 2mb filesize max (Quality 10) jpeg; 96ppi preferred. (Smaller sizes such as 1400x1050 will still be accepted)

Please see Nature Definition (click here) for what is eligible for the Nature Award. Please also check the Monochrome Definition (click here). The others do not have a definition and will be defined by the Judges.

2018 Event

Late Feb/Early March all Clubs receive an email outlining all the details they require to compete in the year's competitions. The Closing Date for entries to drop-off points remains 1st May annually, or to the organiser, John McVie, by that date.

Club Secretaries/Competition Secretaries are asked to collate their Club's entries and complete the website Online Entry for this Competition, and deliver all their member's prints (if applicable) together. We ask for the person collating the entries to supply their contact details, and address in case of any queries during processing, or return of prints. We do not need any information about the author other than their name.

The fee for this year is 70p per photo plus £2 per Club per section entered (i.e. if you enter 3 sections as a Club you pay the no of photos x 70p PLUS £6).

Club Secretaries are asked to collect all monies from their members and include it, with the prints, or forms, as one cheque made payable to the ‘Scottish Photographic Federation’.

For 2018, we again have an online entry system in place for entry to this competition through this website. This will be entered per author, per title, per section. Digital Images of all prints entered are required to ensure the best quality for the Portfolio CD shows.

There will again be three competitions (sections) - Monochrome Print, Colour Print and Digital Image (PDI); You can enter as many sections as you wish. Max 4 entries per author per Section - Authors do not have to have 4 entries, they can enter only one if they wish.

The Club requires to select it's Club entry from the member's entries that have been uploaded - A Club entry consists of 4 Mono Prints (max 2 per author); 4 Colour Prints (max 2 per author); 6 Digital Images (PDI) (max 2 per author)

See rules for full details.

No Filenaming required for any of the digital files - the website will do the filenaming for you, simply enter the title and author name, and the website will do the rest including numbering and adding the Club's code. Any problems with your Online Entry please contact Libby

Digital Images of all Prints submitted will also be required to be uploaded to give the best possible quality in the Portfolio Shows which are supplied to the Clubs for viewing during next season.

Please see Nature Definition (click here) for what is eligible for the Nature Award. Please also check the Monochrome Definition (click here). The others do not have a definition and will be defined by the Judges.

Full Rules are available to download above. We have also supplied entry Collation Forms which Club Organizers can supply to their Club Members, to complete their print and image details on, and hand back with their entries. This will give the Club Organizer all the details required to complete their Club's entry. Details of all the available Drop-Off points are also available to download above - please note their deadlines where different to 1st May.

Who can Enter

The competition is open to all members of SPF Clubs, but all the entries from one Club must be collected, collated and submitted by one person from the Club, usually the competition secretary. There is however no minimum number of authors required from a club so if only two of you are interested in entering then that is fine – just arrange for one of you to act as the contact, and upload and organise delivery of both entries.

Delivery or Posting of Prints

All prints for the competition have to be submitted to the drop-off points by the earlier date shown (where applicable), in order that we receive the prints by the competition closing date of 1st May.

Please phone (not email) the person to whom you intend to deliver your entry and arrange a suitable time for this well in advance of when you hope to deliver. The drop-off points are listed on the timetable sheet, as are delivery deadlines - please see this for full details. Please note this closing date is to allow entries to be passed on from outlying areas so please ensure your entry reaches your local drop off point in time.

If you miss the drop-off date then you will have to arrange with John McVie to get entries direct to him, if possible. All postal entries must be sent to John McVie, to arrive no later than 1st May. Entries can also be handed in to John by prior arrangement.
